"Choro has an uplifting quality - it is like diving into a spring of happiness! These contagious melodies will follow you home after you have spent an evening (or afternoon) listening or dancing along. I miss those relaxed, happy Sunday afternoons playing choro in Rio; what better way to ease into the week than being surrounded and nurtured by beautiful melodies, rhythms, and your closest friends! We are pleased to have the opportunity to recreate a little of that Brazilian Sunday magic right in our beautiful coastal town of Pacifica!” - Celia Malheiros
The word choro in Portuguese literally means "to cry," which seems like an ironic name for music that is often so joyous and festive, the term refers to the "weeping" qualities of the solo instrument, usually a flute or clarinet. This music, also called chorinho, emerged in the late 1800s in Rio and is considered the first characteristic genre of Brazilian popular music. Structurally it is the Brazilian music that is closest to European classical music with it’s counter point, large leaps in its melody and its dizzying speeds, surprising changes of harmony and improvised sound, yet retains a personality that is all Brazilian. This is extremely virtuosic music, usually instrumental, that is played to sound very natural and spontaneous and that has the same contagious energy of samba.
